Hi. I’m Macey Phillips. Writer, educator, and copywriter.

My specialty is in fiction, but I also write the occasional poem and essay. You can check out my latest work here.

Right now, I have a novel for sale. It’s called This is Not a Drill. I like to think of it as television’s Abbott Elementary meets Tommy Orange’s There, There. Here is a little preview:

There isn’t anything about this particular spring that forecasts the thing to come. The thaw starts out the same, slowly. The school shakes out, and light fills the halls in the dark vacuum of another long winter. Students start to show up in shorts, knobby-kneed and awkward in their winter skin. In May, teachers open their windows again. The front doors swing wide in the hopes that a breeze clears the hallway of the heat and stink of sweaty kids. The janitor props his office door with a cement brick. The school becomes wide open.

I graduated from the Ohio State University with my MFA in creative writing where I also served as the managing editor for The Journal. I’ve taught English and creative writing at the middle school, high school, and college levels for over six years. I still enjoy visiting the classroom, so if you are seeking a guest lecturer, reach out! I also run my own creative writing workshops—more info on that soon.

I make my home in Cincinnati, Ohio where I am a copywriter by day. I enjoy walks with my dog, reading, and cooking intricate pasta dishes. Check out some of my latest work and get in touch. I’d love to hear from you.
